Newcastle City Council recently took the opportunity to refurbish Haymarket Bus Station’s concourse. The existing fuel resistant SMA pavement had struggled to cope with the channelised bus traffic driven in and out of the station. Coupled with fuel contamination to the bus stands, significant deformation and ‘rutting’ of the surface course had occurred. This lead to a series of unsuccessful patch repairs being carried out until finally it was decided to replace the defective pavement. 40mm Hardicrete™ Cementitious Grouted Macadam was specified as the solution, having successfully been used in the nearby Eldon Square bus station. Hardicrete™ is a superior reinforced surfacing material certified by the BBA and described as a hybrid between asphalt and concrete. It is designed for heavy duty applications to withstand intense traffic loadings and fuel / leachate contamination. It is also jointless and has a rapid installation time, making it the ideal material for the project. The programme involved planing the surface course on a Sunday night, then resurfacing with a 40mm depth of Hardicrete™ over Monday and Tuesday. Following a curing period of 48 hours the induction loops were installed and road markings completed. The bus station was reopened and fully operational on the Saturday. Hardicrete™ is regularly specified and has been utilised nationwide on bus infrastructure projects providing a warranty backed heavy duty fuel resistant solution.
